There’s nothing that injures employees or followers morale than a leaders indecision. God is extremely displeased with individuals who are neither cold nor hot. I once heard the prominent CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, state that in his companies, managers who make wrong decisions are minimally punished. However, those who make no decision at all and as a result the company suffer substantial hit pay the ultimate price; the cost for indecision is their jobs.
Effective leaders must be pro-active in turbulent times and make the hard choice irrespective of the risk involved. When the black berry phones first emerged in the market, its executives approached the CEO of Econet Zimbambwe with a credit top up sharing arrangement from all customers using the phones. They proposed to receive $20 out of every $25 credit cards sold. This sounded insane and completely impractical to the CEO. The matter was escalated to the Chairman of the company. The chairman, listen calmly to the proposal and noted that the Blackberry executives had their minds made up. Without further negations, he instructed the CEO to sign the deal.
What did the Chairman see that the CEO could not? Explaining later, Strive Masiyiwa, the chairman discerned that the blackberry had an upper hand. If they turned down the offer, they would hand the gadgets over to their competitors, thus doing a great harm to the company. The black berry was the first true smart phone that could access the internet. Years later, when the blackberry was phased out by more creative apple iPhone, they placed more competitive demands. Econet found it easy to comply having learned from the black berry experience. True business leaders are calculative and able to make hard decisions objectively, with a long term view.
